Dimension” lacks formal definition

The reviewer is correct. S(T) is introduced as a metric but the mapping from simultaneity → dimensional state space is asserted, not derived. The cross-domain comparisons (geometric 3D, Hilbert 2^n, “effective 4–5D mesh”) are currently incommensurable.

Cure: Add a single definitional section — call it a Dimensional Substrate Mapping — that formally establishes:

  • S(T) as the cardinality of simultaneously active, memory-coherent reasoning instances at time T
  • “Effective dimension” as a function: D_eff = f(S(T), memory_topology, context_coverage)
  • Explicitly disclaim geometric and Hilbert-space analogies as motivating metaphors only, not structural equivalences
  • Frame the comparisons as illustrating scale-class differences, not identity

This is one tight paragraph plus one equation. It doesn’t require a new section — it can be inserted into the existing dimensional framing at first use, and a footnote can discharge the Hilbert-space overreach cleanly.

The effective dimensional level of M is defined as: D_eff(M) = f( S(T), τ, C ) where S(T) is the count of concurrently active, memory-coherent reasoning instances at timestamp T (measurable directly from system logs); τ is the memory topology — the graph structure connecting agents to a shared coherent substrate; and C is context coverage — the fraction of the relevant problem space simultaneously addressable by M at T. The dimensional frame is epistemological: D_eff is a predictive metric, not an assertion that agent meshes occupy geometrically higher-dimensional physical space. Imagine you’re trying to solve a giant puzzle.

One person alone can only see the pieces right in front of them. That’s your baseline — one brain, one view.

Now add more people, but they’re all in separate rooms with no way to talk. More bodies, same problem — no one knows what the others are doing.

D_eff measures something different: not just how many people are working, but how well-connected and simultaneously aware they are. It asks three things:

  1. S(T) — how many brains are actively thinking right now? Not total headcount. Active, right now, on the same problem.
  2. τ — can they actually share a working memory? Are they all reading the same whiteboard, or are they each scribbling on private napkins? The shape of how they’re connected matters.
  3. C — how much of the puzzle can the whole group see at once? If each person only sees 1% of the puzzle, adding ten people might still leave 90% invisible.

A group scoring high on all three doesn’t just work faster — it works in a qualitatively different way, like the difference between a person reading a map and a flock of birds navigating as one organism.

The “5D mesh” language isn’t claiming agents live in a physics textbook. It’s saying: when D_eff is high enough, the effective problem-solving reach of the mesh jumps to a different class — the way a 3D creature can do things a 2D creature literally cannot conceive of.

The proof isn’t philosophical. It’s: does using D_eff predict behaviour that just counting agents misses? That’s what §7 tests.

D_eff → qualitatively higher class. A risk buried in a financial clause that triggers a technical integration problem that violates a regulatory requirement — that three-way connection is visible to the mesh as a single object. No human team catches it in one pass.

§10 — Adversarial Tests The examples directly pre-empt two attacks:
