Blockchain coherence ≠ quantum coherence
The reviewer flags “temporal coherence via blockchain anchoring” as being structurally different from quantum non-local correlations. This is correct and the paper should not appear to conflate them.
Cure: Rename the concept throughout. “Verifiable Temporal Provenance” (VTP) as the reviewer themselves suggests, or “Distributed Coherence via Tamper-Evident Provenance.” Then add a single sentence explicitly distinguishing: “Unlike quantum coherence which depends on non-local entanglement, VTP establishes classical distributed coherence through append-only cryptographic anchoring — a weaker but practically realizable and auditable coherence property.“ This turns a vulnerability into a feature: you’re claiming something achievable, not overstating.
Strategy first
The rename is surgical — not a global delete of all coherence language, but a precise disambiguation. Three categories:
- Category A — “temporal coherence” referring to the blockchain anchoring mechanism → rename to Verifiable Temporal Provenance (VTP)
- Category B — “coherence” as a general property of the mesh/system → leave untouched
- Category C — “Coherence Equivalence Threshold” (§10) → leave untouched — this refers to classical MAS exhibiting quantum-analogous emergent properties, a different concept entirely
Occurrence map: every instance requiring change
OCCURRENCE 1 — Abstract, sentence 3
BEFORE:
...constitutes a distinct and practically superior coherence
mechanism for the class of problems that matter to human
civilisation.
AFTER:
...constitutes a distinct and practically superior coordination
mechanism — Verifiable Temporal Provenance (VTP) — for the
class of problems that matter to human civilisation.
Purpose: First use in paper. Plants the term early.
OCCURRENCE 2 — §3.1, first paragraph (primary definition point)
BEFORE:
What distributed intelligence requires is verifiable temporal
coherence: the capacity to reconstruct the complete relational
state of the system at any point in time, support novel
inference from that reconstruction, and do so in a manner
that is trustless, immutable, and auditable without central
authority. Quantum superposition cannot provide this.
Blockchain-anchored timestamping can — and does.
AFTER:
What distributed intelligence requires is Verifiable Temporal
Provenance (VTP): the capacity to reconstruct the complete
relational state of the system at any point in time, support
novel inference from that reconstruction, and do so in a
manner that is trustless, immutable, and auditable without
central authority. Unlike quantum coherence — which depends
on non-local entanglement between physical particles and
cannot be observed without collapsing the superposition — VTP
is a classical distributed property: coherence established
through append-only cryptographic anchoring, tamper-evident
and fully auditable. VTP is a weaker but practically
realisable coordination primitive, and a superior answer to
the class of problems civilisational-scale intelligence must
actually solve. Quantum superposition cannot provide this.
Blockchain-anchored timestamping can — and does.
Purpose: This is the load-bearing fix. The bridging sentence lives here — at the point of formal definition — where the reviewer will look first. It explicitly distinguishes VTP from quantum coherence without apologising for the distinction.
OCCURRENCE 3 — §3.1, section title
BEFORE:
3. Blockchain-Native Coordination: Temporal Coherence, Not
Superposition Equivalence
AFTER:
3. Blockchain-Native Coordination: Verifiable Temporal
Provenance, Not Superposition Equivalence
Minor. Keeps the adversarial framing (“Not Superposition Equivalence”) which is rhetorically useful — shows the paper knows the difference.
OCCURRENCE 4 — §3.2, reference to “coherence model”
BEFORE:
This is precisely the coherence model of the blockchain-
anchored agent mesh.
AFTER:
This is precisely the VTP model of the blockchain-anchored
agent mesh.
One word swap. No structural change.
OCCURRENCE 5 — §4.3, the convergence paragraph
BEFORE:
DIE's shared coherent memory substrate, anchored immutably
via blockchain timestamps across a self-replicating agent
mesh, is a classical implementation of the same coordination
principle: not the same mechanism, but the same structural
solution to the same bottleneck.
AFTER:
DIE's VTP substrate — shared memory anchored immutably via
blockchain timestamps across a self-replicating agent mesh —
is a classical implementation of the same coordination
principle: not the same mechanism, but the same structural
solution to the same serialisation bottleneck.
Inserts VTP as the noun; adds “serialisation” before bottleneck for precision.
OCCURRENCE 6 — §6 (agenti2), memory architecture paragraph
BEFORE:
The blockchain timestamp anchors each episodic snapshot
immutably.
AFTER:
The blockchain timestamp anchors each episodic snapshot
immutably as a VTP record.
Three words appended. Threads the terminology through the systems section.
OCCURRENCE 7 — §13 Conclusion, bullet point 4
BEFORE:
Blockchain-anchored temporal reconstruction — the SS1/SS2
snapshot model grounded in 500 years of double-entry
bookkeeping practice — is the correct coherence mechanism
for distributed intelligence, not a substitute for quantum
superposition but a superior answer to a different question.
AFTER:
Verifiable Temporal Provenance (VTP) — the SS1/SS2 snapshot
model grounded in 500 years of double-entry bookkeeping
practice — is the correct coordination mechanism for
distributed intelligence: not a substitute for quantum
superposition but a superior answer to a different question.
Replaces the longest “blockchain-anchored temporal reconstruction” phrase with VTP, which by §13 the reader has now been using for twelve sections. Tighter.
What is explicitly NOT changed
| Location | Term | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| §10 title | “Coherence Equivalence Threshold” | Refers to quantum-analogous emergent properties — different concept, correct as-is |
| §2.4 | “coherent intelligence snapshots (SS1, SS2)” | Describes mesh internal coherence, not the blockchain mechanism |
| §7.2 | “coherent memory substrate” | System architecture term, not the quantum analogy |
| §3.3 | “coordination is enforced not through entanglement” | Correct contrast language — keep |
Net effect
- VTP appears 7 times across Abstract, §3.1, §3.2, §4.3, §6, §13
- Defined formally once at §3.1 with the bridging sentence
- Reviewer’s quantum coherence conflation objection fully discharged
- Zero content lost — the argument is strengthened, not retreated from
- Word count impact: approximately +60 words net (the bridging sentence)
